The basics

What is asthma?

Asthma is a condition in which the airways become inflamed and narrow, making it harder to breathe. Symptoms can include:

  • Cough
  • Wheezing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest tightness
  • Nighttime coughing
  • Symptoms during exercise

Symptoms and severity can vary significantly from person to person.

What to expect

What happens during an asthma assessment?

  1. Your symptoms

When they happen, how often they occur and what triggers them.

  2. Your medications

We review what you are taking and how often you need rescue medication.

  3. Inhaler technique

Even the right medication may not work properly if the inhaler is not being used correctly.

  4. Lung function

Spirometry may be performed to measure how well your lungs are working.

  5. Allergy triggers

Allergy testing may be recommended when allergic asthma is suspected.

Better control

Our goal

Good asthma management aims to reduce:

  • Daytime symptoms
  • Nighttime symptoms
  • Exercise limitations
  • Need for rescue medication
  • Asthma attacks
  • Emergency visits

Treatment is adjusted based on the patient's symptoms, lung function and overall level of control.
