Is Allergy Testing Covered by OHIP?

This is one of the most common questions we hear in clinic, and the short answer is yes. Most allergy testing is covered by OHIP.

What is covered by OHIP?

With a valid Ontario health card and a physician referral, OHIP typically covers:

• Allergist consultation
• Skin prick testing for environmental and food allergies
• Patch testing for contact dermatitis
• Follow-up visits with the allergist

For most patients, this means there is no cost for standard allergy assessment and testing.

What may not be covered?

Some services may not be covered by OHIP, including:

• Certain blood allergy tests
• Medications, including biologics and immunotherapy products

If something is not covered, this will always be discussed with you in advance so there are no surprises.

Why would blood testing be recommended?

Blood testing may be helpful when:

• Skin testing is not safe or not possible
• You cannot stop antihistamines
• Further clarification is needed for a specific allergy

In these situations, blood tests are often self-pay.

The bottom line:

Most patients are reassured to learn that seeing an allergist, skin testing, and patch testing are covered by OHIP with a referral. If additional testing is needed, your allergist will explain why and outline any potential costs.
