What is an immune deficiency?
Your immune system protects you from bacteria, viruses, fungi and other infections. An immune deficiency occurs when one or more parts of that system do not work properly.
Some immune deficiencies are inherited, while others may develop because of another medical condition or treatment.
When should an immune problem be considered?
Most people get infections from time to time. What may require further investigation is a pattern such as:
- Recurrent infections
- Unusually severe infections
- Infections that are difficult to clear
- Frequent sinus or ear infections
- Recurrent pneumonia
- Requiring repeated or prolonged antibiotics
- Infections with unusual organisms
- Poor growth in a child
- A family history of immune deficiency

We look carefully at the type, severity and frequency of infections.
Family history
Some immune conditions can run in families.
Previous medical records
Hospitalizations, cultures, antibiotic use and previous test results can provide important clues.
Blood testing
Depending on the situation, testing may examine blood-cell counts, immunoglobulin levels, antibody responses and other parts of the immune system.
Further testing if needed
Further testing may be recommended depending on the initial findings.
Does having frequent infections mean I have an immune deficiency?
No. There are many reasons someone may experience repeated infections.
The purpose of an immunology assessment is to determine whether the pattern is unusual enough to require further investigation.

Immunology evaluations begin with a referral, like all our assessments.
Assessments are by referral, and patients cannot book directly. Ask your family doctor, walk-in clinic, or another healthcare provider to fax a referral to 416 850 9993. Our team reviews it and contacts you to arrange the appointment.
