What to Expect During a Food Challenge at Dandelion Allergy Clinic

Food challenges are a valuable part of allergy diagnosis and management. They help determine whether a patient can safely eat a food that previously tested positive on an allergy test or caused symptoms. At our allergy centre, we take every precaution to ensure this procedure is done safely, comfortably, and under close supervision.

What is a Food Challenge?

A food challenge is a medically supervised test where a patient eats gradually increasing amounts of a suspected allergen in a controlled setting. It’s considered the most accurate way to confirm or rule out a food allergy.

Who Should Have a Food Challenge?

Food challenges are typically recommended for:

  • Children who have outgrown a known allergy
  • Patients with unclear allergy test results
  • Those who have avoided a food for years but want to reintroduce it safely

How It Works

  • Preparation: You may be asked to stop certain medications before the challenge. You'll also need to bring the food being tested (e.g., milk, eggs, peanuts, etc.).
  • Arrival & Baseline Check: Vitals are checked and any symptoms are noted.
  • Dosing: The food is given in small, measured amounts every 15 - 30 minutes.
  • Monitoring: After each dose, our team watches closely for any signs of a reaction.
  • Completion & Observation: If no reaction occurs, a full serving is eaten. You will then be monitored for a period of time before going home.

Why Is It Important?

Food challenges help prevent unnecessary avoidance of foods and allow for a more accurate dietary plan. They can reduce anxiety for patients and families and open the door to a more normal lifestyle if the result is negative.

Safety is Our Priority

Our clinic is fully equipped to handle any allergic reaction, including anaphylaxis. Trained medical staff are present throughout the test, and emergency medications are always on hand.
